Headset Guide
A Headset should be selected for the person who will use it, the phone it will be used with and the environment it will be used in.
There are two main styles of headset which are:-
Over the Head
Over the Ear
Over the Head Headsets are usually more secure and comfortable than over the ear headsets.
Many headsets come with both types of adapters so the wearer can choose which wearing style they are comfortable with - make sure that you check whether both options are included if you require this choice.
There are several differnet ways of connecting a headset to a phone and these are explained below:-
Headsets for use with Headset Phones
Many manufacturers of system telephones have telephones with a dedicated headset port which means that a headset can be connected without the use of an adapter / amplifier base. You will need to check with the phone manufacturer how the phone and headset will work when using the built in headset port as some telephones and phone systems might need programming to set up the phone as 'Headset Working' usually with an answer/release button being set up to enable the user to answer the call without lifting the handset and just pressing the answer button.
Headsets for use with other phones.
If your telephone does not have a dedicated headset port then you would need to purchase a headset AND a suitable headset / amplifier base. This base connects to the telephone where the handset curly cord plugs into the phone (some telephones have fixed curly cords so may not be compatibe with headsets at all). The Handset curly cord and the headset then bopth plug into the Adapter / Amplifier base and there is usually a switch on the base to switch between headset and handset mode.
In most cases where a phone does not have a dedicated headset port you will need to lift the handset from the receiver to answer a call whether using the handset or headset and likewise return the handset to the receiver to finish the call. Some headset bases are compatible with handset lifters than can perform this task for you and it certainly makes using the headset easier.
Many of the latest cordeless headsets are available with a handset lifter and this makes them the ideal choice for use with most types of phone, as they can be connected without any programming or manual lifting of the handset and also provide a clear working environment without wires between the phone and headset.
Cordless and Cell Phones / Mobile Phones
Many cordless and mobile phones now have 2.5mm jacks for headsets and don't need an adapter box. Some older mobile phones need a small adapter to use a headset and some brands only work with specific headsets - for mobile phones we usually recommend that you use the manufacturers recommended headset.
